The role


Semiconducting 2D monolayer materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, offer new opportunities in ultrathin transparent opto-electronics, such as photodetectors and light emitting devices. To realize large area devices the 2D materials will be grown by chemical vapour deposition (CVD). The post holder will work on developing methods for the large area growth of 2D materials such as monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, graphene, and hBN. The research will develop methods for wafer scale production with control over doping, layer number, alloying, layer stacking. The epitaxial growth of vertical stacked heterostructures will be pursued for enhanced opto-electronic device performance.


The post holder is expected to work effectively with other members of a team under the supervision of Professor Jamie Warner to solve challenges in the broad field of large area transparent optoelectronics using all 2D materials.


The post holder will be expected to synthesize a range of 2D materials using chemical vapour deposition. This will include the maintenance and development of CVD apparatus and the provision of 2D materials to the wider group activities. They will contribute to high quality papers based on the groups research results. Opportunities for IP will be pursued in collaboration with Oxford University Innovation Ltd.




  • Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) growth of 2D materials and their characterization
  • Development batch production approaches for CVD growth of 2D materials.
  • Maintain and operate CVD systems for 2D material synthesis.
  • Manage own academic research and administrative activities. This involves small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines
  • Adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques and experimental protocols
  • Test hypotheses and analyse scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and      refining working hypotheses as appropriate
  • Collaborate in the preparation of scientific reports and journal articles and occasionally present papers and posters
  • Use specialist scientific equipment in a laboratory environment
  • Act as a source of information and advice to other members of the group on scientific protocols and experimental techniques
  • Represent the research group at external meetings/seminars, either with other members of the group or alone
  • Carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups



Selection criteria




  • Hold a relevant Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s or PhD/Dphil degree.
  • Able to demonstrate experience in experimental synthesis related to chemical vapour deposition.
  • Possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes
  • Ability to manage own research and associated activities
  • Previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations or experimental research.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings





  • Experience of independently managing a discrete area of a research project
  • Experience of actively collaborating in the development of research articles for publication




About OSCAR (Oxford Suzhou Centre for Advanced Research)  

OSCAR, the first overseas research centre of the University of Oxford, is working closely with the Suzhou Industrial Park and both academic and industrial collaborators in China to progress a range of exciting societal and economic development opportunities.

As a multidisciplinary research, innovation and technology centre, OSCAR focuses on research challenges and technologies that both complement the Centre’s location in Suzhou Industrial Park and capitalise on current Oxford research strengths.
